Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is an HS code?
The Harmonized System (HS) code is a 6-digit international product classification used by customs authorities worldwide. Canada extends this to 10 digits in the Canadian Customs Tariff. The first 6 digits are internationally standardized — the remaining digits are country-specific.
How do trade agreements affect my duty rate?
Trade agreements like CUSMA (with the US and Mexico), CETA (with the EU), and CPTPP (with Pacific Rim countries) provide preferential duty rates — often 0% — for goods that meet rules of origin requirements. The calculator shows you all available preferential rates so you can choose the lowest one your goods qualify for.
What is the MFN rate?
The Most Favoured Nation (MFN) rate is the default duty rate applied to imports from any WTO member country. It is the highest rate you would normally pay. Trade agreement preferential rates are always equal to or lower than MFN.
What is SIMA and why does it matter?
The Special Import Measures Act (SIMA) authorizes Canada to impose anti-dumping and countervailing duties on goods that are dumped or subsidized by foreign governments. These duties are in addition to regular customs duties and can be very significant — sometimes over 100% of the goods' value.
Is this calculator accurate for customs purposes?
This calculator provides estimated duty rates based on 4-digit HS headings. Actual duties are determined at the 10-digit tariff classification level by the CBSA. For binding rulings, consult a licensed customs broker or request an advance ruling from the CBSA.
